RADIO

October 4, 2019 by Gregg DeMey

I’ve loved the radio since I was little. When I was in kindergarten, my parents gave me an AM/FM receiver that looked like a box of animal crackers (small, rectangular, pink background with lots of animals on it for those not old enough to remember). As a young insomniac, I loved to listen to baseball games, talk radio, and the Top 40 station. The interesting stuff on the airwaves seemed so much better than sleep!

As an auditory learner, I still love to listen to the radio. I routinely thank God for letting me live in the age of Podcasts, Spotify, and Sirius XM. There is more provocative and intriguing content to listen to than ever before in human history. And in Chicago, pretty much every Cubs game is broadcast over radio which is still my favorite way to take in a baseball game.

The tables turned on me this week when I sat down with Dan Ehrman from WYLL, 1160 on the AM dial. One of Dan’s missions is to interview spiritual leaders from around Chicago and listen to what the Holy Spirit is doing locally. Elmhurst CRC was hardly the first in line for this. Dan has interviewed more than 100 leaders at this point in his project. Dan is in a unique position to discern and describe the spiritual common denominators of what God is up to in Chicagoland right now!

For those who are curious, this program will air at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 6 (1160 AM) and will be available as a podcast the following Monday. It made me proud of Elmhurst CRC to be able to speak about God’s faithful hand throughout our history and some of the fresh winds of the Spirit that are blowing these days as well.

I also had this thought after the interview was over: God has been continuously transmitting his Word (and THE Word) from heaven to earth for over 2,000 years.

This is the most amazing programming of all! What a miracle that God’s grace, affection and Jesus’ presence are -- like radio waves -- always present in the air around us simply waiting for a receiver to be tuned in. I want to fine tune the dials of my life so that I’m receiving this signal with 100% power and potential. That’s the kind of programming I can stand behind.

Blessings to you for a weekend “tuned in” to what really matters,

Pastor Gregg
